What Is a Die Cut Sticker?

A die cut sticker is cut through both the sticker material and its backing paper along a chosen outline. Each sticker arrives as an individual piece, with the backing trimmed to the same shape as the sticker. The outline can follow a logo, illustration, or other design, with or without a border around the printed artwork.

Think of a coffee cup illustration. Instead of printing it inside a rectangle, you can have the sticker cut around the cup and its handle. The result is a standalone sticker shaped around your design.

"Die cut" describes how the sticker is cut. It doesn't tell you what material it's made from, how strong the adhesive is, or whether it's waterproof.

How Are Die Cut Stickers Made?

Making a printed die cut sticker generally involves three main steps:

    1. Print the artwork. The design is printed onto an adhesive material, such as vinyl or paper.
    2. Add protection if needed. A compatible laminate may be applied to protect the printed surface and create a matte or glossy finish.
    3. Cut the outline. Cutting equipment follows a cut line through the sticker material and backing, separating each sticker into its finished shape.

What Are Die Cut Stickers Made Of?

Die cut stickers can be made from different materials. Two common options are vinyl and paper.

Vinyl is a practical choice for stickers that need to handle moisture and everyday use. Depending on the material, adhesive, ink, and protective finish, vinyl stickers can be suitable for water bottles, laptops, and outdoor applications.

Paper can work well for dry indoor projects and packaging. Its suitability for moisture or wear depends on the specific stock and coating.

At Sticker Kiko, our standard die cut stickers use KikoGuard™ vinyl, with matte or gloss finish options. They're waterproof, UV-resistant, and scratch-resistant.

When comparing products, check the material specifications as well as the cut style. Two stickers can have the same shape and still perform differently.

What Are Die Cut Stickers Used For?

Die cut stickers work especially well when the design's outline is part of its appeal, or when you want each sticker to be a separate item.

    Brand Logos

A custom outline helps preserve the character of a logo, whether it features lettering, a mascot, or an illustrated object. Businesses can hand these stickers to customers or include them with purchases.

    Artist Merchandise

Characters and illustrations can become individual products for online shops, art markets, and convention tables. The shaped edge helps the artwork feel complete before the buyer even peels it.

    Events and Giveaways

Individual stickers are easy to display on a table or distribute in event bags. A simple, recognizable design can work well as a souvenir people take home.

    Packaging Inserts

A loose sticker gives customers something they can keep or place on their own belongings. Unlike a label already attached to a box, it becomes a small extra included with the order.

Stickers used on bottles, vehicles, or outdoor gear also need materials and adhesives suited to those conditions. The cut alone doesn't make them suitable for every surface.

Die Cut vs. Kiss Cut Stickers

The main difference is the backing paper. Die cut stickers are cut through both the sticker and backing, creating separate pieces. Kiss cut stickers are cut through the sticker layer while leaving a larger backing area around the design, which can make peeling easier.

With the same artwork, material, and sticker outline, the two can look the same once applied.

Design Tips for Die Cut Stickers

A few checks before printing can help your finished stickers look the way you expect.

Decide Whether You Want a Border

Die cut stickers can have a white border. Cutting through the backing doesn't mean the printed artwork must run all the way to the edge.

    • Default white border: A border creates space between the artwork and the cut line. A white border on the sticker is different from the extra backing surrounding a kiss cut design: the border stays with the sticker when you peel it.
    • Custom cut lines & bleed: For a borderless design, the background color or artwork needs to extend beyond the cut line. This extra area is called bleed and is trimmed away during cutting. If you're supplying your own cut line for Sticker Kiko, include 1/8" (about 3 mm) of bleed to help prevent unwanted white edges if the cut shifts slightly.

See our full-bleed guide for more detail.

Choose a Size That Fits Your Artwork

Check the design at its actual print size. Small lettering, fine lines, and closely spaced details may look clear on a large screen but become difficult to read on a small sticker.

The artwork's proportions matter, too. A wide logo won't automatically fill a square size without cropping, extra space, or distortion. Confirm the finished width and height rather than assuming both dimensions will match a preset size.

Our proof size guide explains how artwork proportions affect the final dimensions.

Check the Cut Line on Your Proof

Tiny points, narrow sections, and separate elements may need a simpler surrounding outline. For example, a small star floating above a character might be included within one shared border rather than cut as a separate piece.

Use your digital proof to check:

    • The finished width and height.
    • The outer cutting shape.
    • The border around the artwork.
    • Any small details near the edge.
    • Whether separate elements are included as intended.

If you're unsure about the shape, choose the free proof option when ordering from Sticker Kiko so you can review the layout before printing.

    FAQ

    Are Die Cut Stickers Waterproof?

Not automatically. Waterproofing depends on the materials and construction. Sticker Kiko's standard die cut vinyl stickers are waterproof, while paper stickers and other products should be checked against their own specifications.

    Are Die Cut Stickers Removable?

They can be, depending on the adhesive. Removal also depends on the surface, how long the sticker has been applied, and exposure to heat or weather. Check the adhesive information before using a sticker on a surface you may need to restore later.

Can Die Cut Stickers Be Round or Square?

Yes. Die cutting describes the cutting process, so circles, squares, and rectangles can also be die cut. In custom sticker shopping, the term is often used to distinguish designs cut around their own outline from standard geometric shapes.

Do I Need to Create My Own Cut Line?

Not necessarily. If you don't have a cut line prepared, upload your artwork and select Sticker Kiko's free proof option. You can check the proposed shape and request adjustments before approving it.
